Harry Kane sends message to fans as England start Women's Euro 2022 campaign

Harry Kane has sent a message of support to the England Women’s team as they begin their Women’s Euro 2022 campaign this evening.

Sarina Wiegman’s side kick-off at a sold-out Old Trafford this evening as they take on Austria in their opening game in Group A. The Lionesses will be hoping to make the perfect start as they eye up a place in the final at Wembley on July 31.

England head into the competition as one of the favourites to go all the way and claim their first European Championship title. Their previous best saw them finish as runners-up to Germany in 2009.

They head into the tournament with an unbeaten record under Wiegman, having won 12 and drawn two of the 14 games under the former Netherlands boss. And with stars such as Lucy Bronze, Nikita Parris, Ellen White and Fran Kirby among their ranks, the hosts will be expected to progress far in the tournament.

Should they reach the final, they would of course emulate the achievements of the men’s team during last summer’s Euro 2020. The Lionesses though will of course be aiming to go one better than Gareth Southgate’s side and lift some silverware.

Ahead of their first game against Austria this evening, the England men’s captain Kane has sent a message on social media to Wiegman’s side. The Tottenham star has urged fans to pack out the stadiums and show their support for the Lionesses this summer.

“Hi everyone, I’m just sending a message out to the England Women’s team,” Kane said. “Obviously they’re getting their Euro campaign started, just want to wish them all the best.

“It’s a home tournament as well so it’s going to be an incredible atmosphere. I’m just urging all the fans to go out there and support them, make them feel at home.

“All the best from me and all the team, we’ll be watching and cheering you guys on. Have an amazing time, and good luck.”
