Harry Kane reveals inspiration for masterclass in Man City vs Tottenham

Tottenham star Harry Kane has played down suggestions his failed transfer to Manchester City was the motive for his masterclass at the Etihad Stadium.

After being priced out of a switch to the Premier League champions last summer, the England captain took centre stage against Pep Guardiola and his star-studded team on Saturday afternoon.

Playing a key role in creating the opener for Dejan Kulusevski — albeit with help from Son Heung-min — Kane settled the scores with a breath-taking double.

His dramatic winner came deep into added-time after Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez (pen) looked set to grab a share of the spoils for City.

It was Kane who had the final say, though, in front of his would-be manager and teammates.

Asked if a failed summer switch to City was a factor in his display, Kane told Sky Sports: " For me it was three losses in a row [for Tottenham] and we had to find a way to get our season back on track.

"It's always a tough place to come, playing against one of the best teams in the world and to grind out a result like we did was really special. Me scoring the goals will get the headlines, but everyone was outstanding. Hopefully we can build on this."

Kane added: "[It was a] Crazy game. We worked so hard for so long and us being 2-1 up for a lot of that second half, it would have been so heart-breaking.

"Credit to the boys, we got another chance at the end and I was able to put it away. It's not time to get too carried away. We go to Burnley midweek and know that will be a tough one."
