Harry Kane reacts to breaking Wayne Rooney record after scoring in Tottenham win

It was the perfect evening for Tottenham as they beat Brighton 2-0 while Arsenal slipped up at home to Liverpool, and it was an even better one for Harry Kane.

The England captain atoned for his earlier miss and scored Tottenham's second goal to add to Cristian Romero's opener to give Spurs a healthy lead on the south coast. But it was a goal that handed Kane an impressive milestone, as he broke Wayne Rooney's goal scoring record away from home.

Kane has now scored the most away goals in Premier League history (95), and has done so in only 139 appearances, beating Rooney's previous record of 94. Something that's even more impressive though, is Kane managed it in 104 fewer games.

The Tottenham star was understandably happy with the milestone, as he said following his sides win: "I was really pleased to get the goal and help the team win the match. Milestones are great especially away from home, it is always tough so to know you can do it year-on-year against tough opposition is nice but it is all about the team and working hard."

Antonio Conte has brought Kane back to his best, and the Italian was also complimentary of his achievement. "It is an outstanding achievement for him but we are talking about a world-class striker," Conte said.

"I am pleased for Harry to score in this way because at the start of the season he struggled a bit and didn't score a lot and now he knows very well with this team he has great opportunities to score in every game. To have a striker like him makes us stronger but at the same time his feeling now is positive because he knows he will have chances."

It was an important win for Tottenham after they were beaten 3-2 away from home against Manchester United, and they've been boosted by the fact that Arsenal lost to Liverpool too. Conte was proud of his side as he added: "I am very pleased for a good performance and because we got three points.

"It is the final part of the season and it is vital to get three points. We want to stay very close to the top to see what will happen at the end of the season. In my opinion we are playing very well and improving a lot with the ball and also tonight we also showed solidity defensively.

"There were a lot of positive things but at the same time from tomorrow we start to think about Sunday against an opponent that is now our target. It is important for us to have a target. We show ambition and I think my players and team needs to have ambition. It is a difficult target to reach but we have to try."

Tottenham now face West Ham who are also in the running for a place in the top four, and Kane knows that they will face a tough test on Sunday. Kane said: "West Ham are right there in the top-four chase, it will be a really tough game and it is really important for momentum going into the international break."

Top four is still currently in Arsenal's hands, as they have two games in hand on those around them, and one game in hand over Tottenham. But there is still one north London derby yet to be played, which could prove to be the difference.
