It is hard to picture an England starting line-up without Harry Kane leading the attack.
A mainstay since his debut in 2015, the 29-year-old will soon replace Wayne Rooney as England's all-time top goalscorer. The focal point of manager Gareth Southgate’s side, Kane is certain of a place on the plane in November - barring injury, of course - and is key to England's hopes of going all the way in Qatar.
But what happens if there’s a change to the script? What if worst comes to worst and the Spurs star, for whatever reason, is unavailable? It will leave the Three Lions reeling and Southgate scrambling.
England have struggled to find a reliable deputy to Kane in recent years. The likes of Tammy Abraham, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ollie Watkins have all acted as understudies for the Spurs man but none have really taken their opportunity, laid down a marker and said definitively 'Yes, I'm next in line.'
There have been injuries, losses of form or confidence, club issues and the simple undeniable fact that, when fit, available and required, Kane starts.
Now there is a new name in the mix, after Brentford’s Ivan Toney was called up for the UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany. Rewarded after a great start to the season, he adds another intriguing layer to the question of who will be Kane's deputy when the World Cup rolls around.
He adds another option to an already packed forwards list, with Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho not making the cut despite their improving form and the likes of Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling all in the mix too.
Intriguingly the Three Lions boss left Toney out of tonight's 23-man squad against Italy. But if he gets a chance against Germany and impresses, does he jump the striking queue?
It provides Southgate with yet another selection headache.
