Harry Kane offers telling response to Man Utd transfer links ahead of pivotal summer

Harry Kane has left the door open for further speculation surrounding his club future after refusing commit himself to Tottenham Hotspur for the long-term.

Last summer was a particularly turbulent one for Kane given he shone for England at Euro 2020 in an effort that saw the Three Lions reach the final of a major tournament for the first time since the 1966 World Cup. However, his name was also relentlessly linked with a switch sway from boyhood club Spurs in favour of a move to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

While on England duty for the upcoming Three Lions friendlies, Kane was pressed on whether he needed to clarify his club future before shifting his full-focus on the Qatar World Cup - his response was eye-opening. "My main focus is finishing this season, I can’t control what’s going to happen in the future," Kane said. "I want to be going into that tournament in the best form possible."

His comments come at a time when Kane is being touted with a move to Manchester yet again, only this time to don the red of United. The speculation stems from the Red Devils reported pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent managerial appointment.

Kane and Pochettino spent five years together while the Argentine occupied the Spurs hot-seat before his dismissal in late-2019. It was under Pochettino when the striker truly started to flourish into one of the most lethal goal-getters in all of European football.

There is every chance Kane is enticed by the idea of working with his former boss once more at Old Trafford, where the chances of the silverware he craves are significantly higher than his current set-up. At 28 years of age, time is running out for Kane to lift the kind of trophies his ability warrants, which explains his desire to up sticks to the Etihad last summer.

Pep Guardiola's side made little secret of their desire to secure his signature, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy played hardball and would not budge from his astronomical asking price of £120million for his star-striker. It ended up being a source of deep frustration for City, who failed to land their number one target having already forked out £100m for Jack Grealish - who is now the most expensive British footballer of all-time.

The City boss publicly bemoaned Spurs' stance in the wake of the window closing: “The club did absolutely everything,” said Guardiola. "We didn’t talk about Tottenham not even one offer, because they didn’t want to negotiate. When one team doesn’t want to negotiate, there is nothing to say. It’s understandable, Tottenham didn’t want to talk so we didn’t talk.

"The moment they open the door maybe it happens. Maybe they say we want £200m – that isn’t going to happen, we don’t have it. We tried to open the door to negotiate, but the big master of negotiations Daniel Levy knows everything, we couldn’t do it. Maybe I’d do the same having Harry Kane in my team. He’s a Tottenham player and I wish him the best in the last years of his career doing well in London."
