Harry Kane makes honest Antonio Conte admission and reveals hopes for his future at Tottenham

Harry Kane has been the first to admit that he hasn't had his greatest season at Tottenham. After the failed move to Man City last summer, the England captain started the 2021/22 campaign slower than anyone would've hoped.

However by the end of it, the striker had broken the Premier League record with Son Heung-min for the most combination goals and he managed to rack up 17 league goals and nine assists. With the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski in January, the trio created a dangerous front line and helped Spurs finish the season strong.

With the help of Antonio Conte after his arrival in November, the Lilywhites went from strength to strength and managed to finish the season inside the top four. This confirmed their spot in the Champions League for next season, giving the current squad a boost and making the club more attractive for potential new signings.

The Italian has had a major influence on Spurs, both on and off the pitch, in the short amount of time he has been in N17. There were some concerns from fans over whether Conte would get the backing he needed, from Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici, in order to build the squad he believes can be successful.

However Tottenham revealed on Tuesday that ENIC had given the club a £150 million investment, which football.london understands will mostly go to backing the 52-year-old during the upcoming transfer window. Conte is believed to want at least six players, with Paratici already seemingly hard at work, with Fraser Forster looking close to being Spurs' first signing of the summer.

The backing of Conte will please Spurs fans and encourage the Italian to remain the man in charge of N17. It will also help in attracting potential new arrivals to Tottenham, by having a world-class manager, along with the top facilities and location.

Not only that but football.london understands that Kane believes Conte being backed can help with the club and his own ambition of winning a major trophy with the Lilywhites. Tottenham have now been without silverware for 14 years and if anyone can change that, it is likely to be the 52-year-old.

football.london understands that the England captain is is excited for the future and isn't planning a move away from Spurs. There is also hope that if the club continues to show this ambition, Kane is understood to be open to extending his stay in N17, beyond the two years he has left on his contract.

In a recent interview with FourFourTwo, the 28-year-old looked back on his season and the rollercoaster nature of it. "Obviously it's been up and down. It wasn't the start of the season that I wanted, of course," Kane admitted.

"I'm my own biggest critic, I know when I'm playing well, I know when I'm not, and I know when I can do better. It was disappointing - England and the other competitions were going OK but the Premier League wasn't quite falling for me. As a team we weren't doing well, so there was a mixture of stuff going on.

"But I'm proud of the way I've turned it around and got back to some decent numbers in the league. It's all part of the journey - I'm always looking to be consistent, but there will be times when things don't go your way and you have to find a way of turning it in your favour," he added.

The improved form of the striker has noticeably improved since Conte's arrival, like a number of his Tottenham teammates and Kane has been full of praise for his boss. "Antonio is a really good manager and I’m really enjoying working with him," the England captain explained.

"He just brings a real passion, an energy, a real enthusiasm to training and games, and just makes you want to work. You want to work hard for him, you want to run for him.

"He’s won everywhere he’s gone, so you respect him a lot, and I’m just enjoying it. I’ve worked with some great managers and he’s another one. I feel like my game’s improving under him. Hopefully it continues," Kane said.

This want for improvement and success is likely to only help Kane become an even better player than he already is. Better performances are likely to be matched with more goals and aside from the record him and Son broke this season, he could be on to an individual record next season.

Tottenham's current all-time goal scorer is the great Jimmy Greaves, who scored 266 goals between 1961 and 1970. Kane is just 18 behind that, meaning it could be a big season to come, for both himself and the club.

"Jimmy was an amazing player for club and country – he scored an incredible amount of goals in a short amount of games. It’s something to try to achieve," Kane admitted.

"I’ve still got a few more to go, but of course it’d be great to be Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer." Tottenham fans will be most happy to hear that their star striker is likely to remain in north London, so thoughts can now turn to bringing in added quality to upgrade the squad and prepare to have a successful season, when the 2022/23 campaign begins in August.
