Harry Kane finally gives Antonio Conte the proof he needs to kickstart Tottenham's season

Amidst the pandemonium of the celebrations, Harry Kane was locked in a long embrace.

Hugo Lloris ran the length of the field to lose himself in the knot of excitement and, after the final whistle, Antonio Conte joined in the disbelieving fun.

But the outstanding image was Kane bear-hugging a supporter.

The delirious fan happily posted the scene on social media. Kane liked it. Actually, he loved it.

If, after the shenanigans of the summer and his relative struggles on the pitch since a move to Manchester City collapsed, Kane needed an occasion to reconnect with the Tottenham faithful, then it came along on Wednesday night.

Ok, it was Leicester City and Kane always enjoys himself against Leicester City.

He has now scored eight goals in his last six visits to the King Power Stadium. He has now scored 18 goals against Leicester City.

He should get to keep Kasper Schmeichel.

His first half goal in the dramatic 3-2 win on Wednesday was the 250th of his club career.

But there was so much more to Kane’s performance than a goal and statistics, impressive though they were.

Kane led Tottenham by example, his work-rate phenomenal.

And, in front of Gareth Southgate as it happened, he went through the full range of his attacking talents.

There was the left-footed effort improbably cleared off the line by Luke Thomas, there was the header that thumped against the crossbar, there was the brilliant-taken goal, there were a couple of decently-hit, right-footed loing-rangers.

And then, in that remarkable period of added time, there was Kane - along with hero Steven Bergwijn - trying to prise the ball from Schmeichel after the Dutchman’s 95th minute leveller.

That showed his mentality.

What showed his class was the ball to Bergwijn that, 80 seconds later, set up the most theatrical of winners.

Tottenham’s victory at the King Power Stadium was significant for many reasons.

It shows this team buys into Conte, it shows Bergwijn might still have a future at the club, it shows they can play decent, fluent football.

But most significant of all, perhaps, it shows Spurs have got their Kane back.

He might know that a stellar second half to the season is needed if that switch to City is to be resurrected this summer.

He might know that Southgate could have been getting just a little worried about his form.

But whatever has given him the extra spur to be at his most inspirational, Conte and the Tottenham fans will not care.

Spurs have got their Kane back.
