Harry Kane could be courted by four clubs who can offer him everything that Tottenham can't

Within minutes of the final whistle on Sunday the footage was doing the rounds again.

Harry Kane, one of the few players to emerge from the St James’s Park Massacre with any credit, is shown looking skyward.

Shoulders slumped, the Tottenham striker turns and appears to be muttering to himself: “What’s the f*****g point, man?”

It had been captured during a game two years ago, when Spurs had their European hopes ended by Aston Villa. But it could easily have been grabbed during Newcastle’s annihilation of his side on Sunday.

The clubs clamouring to present Kane this summer with an offer he’ll be unable to refuse this summer won’t have needed a second look at the clip to know just how unhappy he is.

At 29, 30 in July - he can ill-afford to gamble another season hoping it will come good in the white half of north London.

Yes, Cristian Stellini has finally followed Antonio Conte out of the Spurs exit door and, yes, Ryan Mason is back in to mind the store until the summer. But what then?

Conversations between Spurs chairman Daniel Levy revealed a disaffected and demoralised squad.

An elite manager will not want to spend next season in the Europa League, maybe even the Europa Conference League. And, of the others available, few appear capable of reeling in the Premier League’s big dogs with their squads packed with talent and depth.

Time is not on Kane’s side if he finally wants his goals to mean something.

All of the clubs courting Kane will have either the finance, the track record, the leadership or all three with his disaffection clear for all to see.

Chelsea may be in disarray but at least they have the quality for when they finally do get it right. And, potentially, Kane’s former boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Bayern Munich are crying out for a goalscorer to replace Robert Lewandowski.

Manchester United are the favourites, of course, given the pace of their rebuild, the impact of Erik ten Hag, their Carabao Cup success, their FA Cup Final place and the fact that they represent Kane’s best chance to make himself the Premier League’s leading scorer of all time.

But ambitious Newcastle could yet enter the fray. With a year left on Kane’s contract, why wouldn’t they slide a handkerchief across the table with numbers to make his eyes water?

Champions League football at St James’s Park next season, with a star-studded cast behind him, could turn the scene of one of Kane’s worst moments in football into a brave new world.

It is hard to see what Spurs could offer England’s captain by way of a response, especially as Kane surveys the ashes of yet another season around him.

Spurs will survive if he leaves, of course. Bear in mind they reached the 2019 Champions League Final, six years after Gareth Bale for Real Madrid.

But Bale was able to win the five he got to with the Spanish giants. Likewise another of Spurs’ alumni, Luka Modric.

The best Spurs can do now is have a plan, empower their new manager, ship out the dead wood and spend sensibly. But Spurs seldom do things the easy way, do they?
