Harry Kane and Steven Bergwijn shine - How Tottenham players are doing on international duty

The majority of Antonio Conte's Tottenham squad are on international duty, in the final break of the season. When his team return, Spurs will have nine games remaining until the end of the Premier League campaign.

The Lilywhites are now fifth, after their 3-1 victory over West Ham before the break and sit just three points behind fourth placed Arsenal. Although Tottenham's north London rivals have a game in hand, the battle for a top four spot is still very much up for grabs.

Conte has a small group of players he can continue working with during the break, who weren't called up to play for their country. However with most of them jetting off to represent their nation, football.london takes a look at how they're getting on.

Hugo Lloris

As first choice shot stopper for his club and country, it was another 90 minutes played for Lloris on Friday. His France side beat Ivory Coast 2-1 and the 35-year-old made a number of saves, with the opposing side having nine shots, with four on target.

Cristian Romero & Giovani Lo Celso

Whilst former Tottenham player Juan Foyth was on the bench for Argentina on Friday, the current Spurs players were not involved in the game. Both have a two-game ban for the debacle that took place during the international break earlier in the season, whereby they allegedly breached Covid regulations in their game against Brazil.

However the duo have both still joined their country for the break, seemingly in hope that the ban may be reduced. So far things haven't changed, with neither being involved in the squad for the 3-0 victory over Venezuela.

Pape Matar Sarr

Not the greatest day all round for Sarr and his Senegal side. The 19-year-old remained on the bench for the duration of his nations game against Egypt on Friday and they lost 1-0, to an own goal scored in the opening five minutes of the match.

Bryan Gil

Gil had the opposite all-round evening to Sarr, when the Spain U21s beat Lithuania U21s 8-0 on Friday night. The Spaniard played just 46 minutes in the tie but bagged a goal and an assist in his time on the field. The 21-year-old has been impressing on his loan spell with Valencia so far, and this is clearly continuing with his country.

Matt Doherty & Troy Parrott

There was game time for both of Tottenham's Republic of Ireland players, in their 2-2 draw against Belgium on Saturday. Doherty played the whole 90 minutes on the right of a middle four, as he does for Conte at Spurs. Parrott only got match minutes in the final moments of the game, replacing Callum Robinson in the 92nd minute.

Harry Kane

It was also a good evening for Kane and his England side. Continuing his goal scoring ways, the country captain scored a penalty in England's 2-1 victory over Switzerland on Saturday. The striker was replaced by Ollie Watkins in the 88th minute but produced a solid display, earning the home sides second highest rating on SofaScore (7.99).

Steven Bergwijn & Pierre Emile Hojbjerg

Two Tottenham players going head-to-head during the international break was Hojbjerg and Bergwijn, when Denmark played the Netherlands. The Dane played the whole match in central midfield, the same position he plays with Spurs, whilst Bergwijn got 77 minutes on the pitch.

It was a better night for the 24-year-old as the Netherlands not only won the game 4-2, but Bergwijn netted two goals during the match too. However, it was also a special night for Hojbjerg's team as Christian Eriksen also scored, on his return to playing international football.

Youngsters

After scoring for the England U19s on Wednesday, Dane Scarlett remained on the bench in his nation's 4-0 victory over Armenia on Saturday. However, it was Alfie Devine's time to shine as he scored his first goal for his country, in the opening six minutes of the game and remained on the pitch until the 73rd minute.

For the other U19 youngsters, Thimothee Lo-Tutala played 90 minutes in France's 1-0 defeat to Czech Republic. Matthew Craig replaced his twin brother Michael in the 67th minute in Scotland's 3-0 loss to Hungary.

Some of the Tottenham U17 internationals were also in action on Saturday. Jamie Donley and Rio Kyerematen both got game time for England against France. Donley played 62 minutes before being substituted off and Kyerematen came on in the 90th minute, in their sides 3-1 defeat.

Tom Bloxham remained on the bench when Republic of Ireland U17s lost 3-2 to Finland. However Will Andiyapan played 90 minutes at centre-back when Wales U17s were defeated 5-2 against Turkey.

The only game for the Tottenham squad on Sunday is Kallum Cesay, when Sierra Leone play a friendly against Liberia. Cesay has spoken to Spurs about what it has been like to get his first senior callup for his country.

"It’s definitely a good experience but now I need to work hard, try to get in the team and just keep doing my best," he explained. "Because it’s my first call-up, I feel like I’ve got the most to prove.

"I have to do everything right – I’ve got to train and play well, do the right things off the pitch, recover properly… I’ve got to make an impression and show that I’m there for the next call-up if that comes.

"For me though, every time I go out there, wherever I’m playing, I have to keep giving my all, play how I usually play, if not even better and try to help the team to win games," Cesay added.

There are plenty of fixtures for the Spurs squad still to play during the international break and the players will be hoping they get their chance to get some game time for their country. Conte will be hoping his players can enjoy representing their nation but return without injuries, ahead of the final stretch of fixtures.
