Harry claims royals were 'cold' to him and Meghan Markle at their final royal event

Prince Harry claims he felt "really distant" from his royal relatives and that they were cold towards him during his and Meghan Markle's final outing before they quit the UK.

In the fifth episode of the couple's explosive Netflix documentary, they recalled the Commonwealth Day service in 2020 at Westminster Abbey.

It was their last royal engagement and was attended by all members of the Firm including the late Queen, King Charles, Prince William and his wife Kate.

The engagement was the first time Harry and Meghan had seen some of the other royals since they had sensationally announced they were quitting their royal roles.

And Harry said that he was nervous and did not expect the reception from his family members that he received.

He explained: "We were nervous seeing the family because all the TV cameras and everybody watching at home and everybody watching in the audience, it’s like living through a soap opera, where everybody else views you as entertainment.

"I felt really distant from the rest of my family which was interesting, because so much of how they operate is about what it looks like rather than what it feels like.

"And it looked cold, but it also felt cold."

It comes after they also described their "farewell week" of engagements as "sad" and "bittersweet" after they flew into the UK from Canada, where they had been staying.

Harry said in episode five of their Netflix documentary: “As sad as it is, in order for change to happen a lot of pain has to come to the surface. In order for us to move to the next chapter, you have to finish the first chapter.”

The pair talked about how they went through boxes of their stuff in the UK, and Meghan added: “It really gave us a chance to just look back at our whole love story.

Harry continued: “We always saw Archie running around the garden at Frogmore Cottage and maybe jumping in the Queen’s pond. That was all part of our future and everything changed really really quickly.

“We knew we were going to get some breathing space from this very painful experience that we’d been stuck in but also at the same time, it was really sad."

Meanwhile Meghan described how people blamed her for taking Harry away. She explained: “He wouldn’t have ever been attracted to me if he wasn’t already on his own path.

"Most people need to find someone to blame to try to like reconcile how you’re feeling because something’s change, it doesn’t feel good and you don’t like it and what’s the thing that’s different?

"Well it’s all change when you got here, so it’s your fault so you need to blame me. And it’s also if you can blame me, you have no fault. So that last week was bittersweet."

The documentary also showed a clip of Harry talking into his phone camera, saying: “We’re going to miss the British public. Not going to miss the British press and their followers and their trolls that they create. I’m going to miss this country, so is Meghan.”

As she left the UK for Canada immediately after the service, Meghan said the head of the crew on her flight “came and knelt next to my seat and he took his hat off”.

She said: “I just remember looking at him and he goes ‘We appreciate everything you did for our country’. And it was the first time I felt like someone saw the sacrifice, not for my own country, for this country that’s not mine.”

The duchess also described breaking down in tears in the arms of one of their security staff when she landed in Canada.

She said: “I just collapsed in his arms crying. I was like ‘I tried so hard’. And he was like ‘I know you did. I know you did, ma’am, I know you did’. Like, I tried so hard.

“And that’s the piece that’s really triggering because you go ‘And it still wasn’t good enough, and you still don’t fit in’.”
