Harry Byrne and rising Ireland stars Dan Sheehan and Ryan Baird sign Leinster deals

Rising Ireland stars Ryan Baird and Dan Sheehan, as well as potential future Ireland no 10 Harry Byrne, have signed new Leinster contracts.

The province has been rolling out announcements of new contracts to some of their top players over the course of the week, and this trio will be looked at by Leinster as key figures and leaders in years to come.

Baird and Sheehan both started in Ireland's Six Nations victory over Italy last Sunday, the first time that their pair were given the nod from the start in the championship.

With provincial team-mate Rónan Kelleher injured, Sheehan has a chance of starting against England at Twickenham on Saturday week.

Baird, meanwhile, got his chance in the second row when James Ryan was injured and Iain Henderson got Covid.

The 23-year-old did appear to dodge a card in the game and a disciplinary citing for a high challenge.

Ireland forwards coach Paul O'Connell said it was something Baird has worked on this week.

“I thought he did really well," said O'Connell. "He waited for his chances to come and he took them.

"He was excellent at set piece, he had a great steal at the lineout early on.

"He was obviously high in one tackle and just has to drop his height a bit there. He is doing a bit of work on that after training. He’s normally a really good low tackler.

"He managed the occasion really well. Sometimes players can get a bit of anxiety when they haven’t the experience others guys have.

"But he went into the game full of enthusiasm and very relaxed and he really delivered for us."

Byrne, meanwhile, made his Ireland debut last summer but his progress stalled in the first half of this season due to injury and a loss of form.

However he is currently enjoying a run of games at inside centre, playing alongside his older brother Ross - another no 10 who signed a new contract deal with the province this week.
