Harry and Meghan photo given permanent home at National Portrait gallery

A portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan has been added to the National Portrait Gallery's permanent collection in London, whose patron is the Princess of Wales.

The news was revealed by Misan Harriman, the favoured photographer of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Mr Harriman posted images on social media showing him signing the portrait with the message: "I am humbled and proud to announce that my portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is now part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Dare to dream folks!"

The portrait is part of a series taken in September 2022 at the One Young World summit in Manchester.

It captures the couple holding hands and gazing dramatically into the distance, notable for its lighting and soft focus.

Meghan is dressed in a bright red blouse and trousers from eco-friendly brand AnotherTomorrow, paired with Aquazzura heels and gold hoops, while Prince Harry sports a dark blue suit.

The National Portrait Gallery boasts one of the world's greatest portrait collections, spanning six centuries.

The Princess of Wales, formerly the Duchess of Cambridge, became its patron in January 2012, shortly after her marriage to Prince William.

Her first solo public engagement was the opening of the Lucian Freud Portraits exhibition at the gallery. She later collaborated with the NPG on her lockdown photography project, Hold Still.

As Patron, Kate has no influence over which portraits are added to the gallery's collection.

Mr Harriman is a renowned celebrity and social photographer, making history as the first black man to shoot a cover of British Vogue in the magazine's 104-year history.

He has also emerged as one of Harry and Meghan's most ardent supporters and is often invited to privately document their work.

He was the exclusive photographer chosen by the couple for their recent semi-royal visit to Nigeria, his birthplace.

Mr Harriman also notably took remote photographs from the UK of Harry and a pregnant Meghan in the US, used to announce their expectation of their second child, Princess Lilibet.

A spokesperson for the National Portrait Gallery said: "There are currently no immediate plans to display the work and, as it has just been delivered, it will need to go through our cataloguing process beforeit is available on our website."
