Viewers of the Yellowstone franchise have already seen the foundation of the ranch take place in 1883, which followed the story of Jacob's brother James Dutton and his wife Margaret alongside their children Elsa and John as they travelled to Montana to settle on the land.
While the character was just a toddler in the 1883 series which mainly focused on the tragic story of their daughter Elsa, John will now be a fully-fledged adult living and working with his elderly aunt and uncle.
It is as yet unclear what has become of his parents since their arrival on the land they made their home - Yellowstone has often featured flashbacks depicting James and his relationship with the Native American's residents on the nearby reservation - so some back story is expected to be filled in in the opening episodes.
John's son, Jack - John III's Grandfather - will also make an appearance in the series, setting the scene for more of the Dutton family story to come to life.
