A fighting century from Victoria captain Peter Handscomb has staved off South Australia's victory charge at Adelaide Oval, virtually ending their hopes of featuring in next month's Sheffield Shield final.
Set a challenging 316 to win off 91 overs, Victoria batted conservatively at times to finish the day on 6-236 and ensure the match ended as a draw.
Handscomb came in during the fourth over and remained until the close to end unbeaten on 148 in a 280-ball knock, which included 21 boundaries.
But any satisfaction for the Vics will be tempered by news of yet another concussion for star youngster Will Pucovski.
Pucovski exited the field after just a single over in the field having reportedly been struck in the head during the morning's pre-game warm-up.
Pucovski left Adelaide Oval after lunch and was replaced by 12th man Travis Dean who was eligible to play as a concussion substitute.
Dean was out for a second-ball duck but Handscomb, along with Sam Harper (22), saw off 21 overs in an 75-run sixth wicket stand that edged the Vics closer to safety.
Victoria recovered from 2-7 early on with Test opener Marcus Harris (5) and the free-scoring Nic Maddinson (2) both falling cheaply.
Former Queensland paceman Brendan Doggett (4-51) returned the best figures for the Redbacks, while David Grant chipped in with 2-43.
