Harris campaign officials are planning a fireside chat or town hall with Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney as part of a continued push to reach disaffected Republicans in the closing weeks of the election. The campaign has been intensifying its efforts to engage GOP voters in battleground states who may be disillusioned by former President Donald Trump.
The strategy includes targeting red and rural counties that previously supported Trump and organizing joint campaign events with Republicans, emphasizing a message of prioritizing 'country over party.' The event in question is still in the planning stages but is expected to feature a Republican moderator to ensure a balanced discussion.
Earlier this month, Cheney and Harris shared a campaign platform in Ripon, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the Republican party. During the rally, Vice President Harris directly appealed to Republican and independent voters, while Cheney publicly declared her support for Harris. Cheney's vocal opposition to Trump and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, including her vote to impeach him, led to her removal as House GOP conference chair.
Following her ousting, Cheney assumed the role of vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. The upcoming fireside chat or town hall is seen as a continuation of the Harris campaign's outreach efforts to bridge political divides and attract a broader spectrum of voters.
