Harlequins confirm surprise signing of Leigh Halfpenny

Former Lions and Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny has made a surprise move to Harlequins, in a coup recruit for the Twickenham men.

The 101-cap Wales star spent last term at the Crusaders in New Zealand, but was forced to battle injuries for much of his time in Super Rugby.

Now though the 35-year-old has returned to the UK, and joined up with Quins in a high-profile signing for the west Londoners.

The four-cap Lions star has joined Quins as injury cover for Cadan Murley, who has suffered a new hamstring problem.

Back-three talent Louis Lynagh has now left Quins for Benetton, having launched his Test career with Italy. Add in Murley’s new injury issue, and Quins have now jumped at the chance to add one of the game’s most experienced operators to their ranks.

“I’m excited to join Quins and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my career with such an iconic club,” said Halfpenny.

“I have always admired the Premiership and I’m keen to grab this opportunity with both hands and contribute to the Quins DNA. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and running out in front of a packed Stoop.”

Halfpenny cut his teeth in six years at Cardiff where he made Wales’ full-back berth his own.

The scrum-capped goalkicker then enjoyed three years in France with Toulon, before returning to Wales and serving the Scarlets for six seasons.

While injuries inhibited his opportunity with the Crusaders, Quins have now jumped at the chance to add Halfpenny to their ranks.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Leigh to Quins,” said head coach Danny Wilson.

“His experience speaks for itself, and he will bring plenty of leadership, expertise and high standards to our squad, helping mentor our talented stable of back-three players alongside bringing the benefit of his enormous experience to the wider squad.

“He’s an incredible athlete, highly skilful and adaptive across multiple positions. We’re confident he’ll make a strong impact at Quins this season.”
