A Motherwell electrician’s company has been recognised by his peers as one of the best in the business.
Bright spark Colin Mulvaney started up CM Electrical after serving his apprenticeship and gaining a few years experience working for others.
Colin’s hard work paid off when he was recently named in the top 30 Under-30 Electrical Business Owners at the eFIXX Awards.
The 27-year-old revealed he was working as many hours as he could before deciding to take the leap of faith and go it alone, but now employs another time-served electrician and an apprentice.
The former Brannock High pupil said: “I started my apprenticeship when I was 16 and served it with Saltire. I’ve always kind of worked local on North Lanarkshire [council] contracts and stuff like that. I worked there for a few years after serving my time and then had spells with a couple of other companies, including Mears.
“About three years ago I started a new job and launched my own company as well,” Colin revealed. “I was working my full-time job during the day and then was doing my own company stuff, working five-nights-a-week and weekends.
"I did that for over a year until I had built up a clientele and good volume of work so that I could go self-employed. It’s now two years since I’ve been fully out on my own.
"Last year I took on an electrician, Liam Lynch, who was one of the apprentices from my very first job. And we’ve just started an apprentice as well; Sam Isherwood. We’re a team and we all have the same vision.

“We’re really busy and it’s snowballed since it started. If you’re putting the hard work in, doing the best you can for customers then it just keeps going. You can’t really sit back though. It’s not for the faint-hearted, it comes with different responsibilities.”
The majority of the work CM Electrical take on is domestic, such as the installation of lighting and smart heating controls. They are also certified to carry out works such as Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR).
Colin said: “We do a bit of everything and have been doing a lot of smoke alarms since the new Scottish Government legislation came in. We do a wee bit of commercial work but not a lot.”
The recognition for CM Electrical came unexpectedly but is greatly appreciated by Colin.

He added: “It’s great to be recognised among some huge names in the industry and I’d like to thank whoever nominated us for the award. Efixx is an online electrical industry community and they have a big training centre. They have a focus on the future and ensure that they’re teaching things that might not be taught at college, and keep improving the electrical industry.
“To be named as one of the top electrical business owners under the age of 30 was great. It was anonymous so we didn’t know we were involved in it. I got a call from a woman out of the blue and I thought someone was winding me up.
"I was able to provide some company background and let her know we had recently completed an EV charging course, and things like that. We think that will be massive going forward. We’re trying to keep with the times and eFIXX have recognised that.”
