An Irvine factory's switch to green energy could see a 76-metre turbine built in the town's harbourside.
Ardagh Glass want wind to provide power for their manufacturing plant in Portland Place.
Now they're asking North Ayrshire Council to back plans to erect a single three-bladed turbine on site – close to an existing turbine at neighbouring Watson Auto Storage.
Bosses at the firm say the proposed development forms part of a wider drive to increase the amount of renewable energy generated at the plant.
In August 2021, permission was granted for the installation of solar panels and an external transformer on two warehouses.
If given the green light, the turbine would have an operational lifespan of up to 25 years.
Planning documents lodged with the local authority state: "Ardagh Glass is committed to continuing to meet the energy needs of their entire operations through secure, clean and green renewable energy.
"Glass production at the Ardagh Glass manufacturing facility is an energy intensive process requiring a significant supply of electricity to support the continuous manufacture of glass containers throughout the year.
"The first pillar of the group’s sustainability strategy is to minimise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The proposed development will directly contribute to that through the direct displacement of grid generated electricity, which is still reliant on fossil fuels (over 40 per cent on average).
The purpose of the proposed development is to provide power for the manufacturing plant on site. No grid connection is proposed.
"The recent rise in energy costs is also a key driver for reducing reliance on the electricity grid.
"The facility forms a key part of the food and drink supply chain and high costs in vessel manufacture can contribute to increased costs to the consumer. The proposed development will help mitigate against that cost rise."
The statement adds: "Ardagh Glass is one of the region’s largest employers and has a demonstrable ongoing commitment to the wider community. Continual improvement in cost-effective operation assists in safeguarding the future the facility at this location."
