Happy Valley viewers rage at Catherine Cawood's sluggish call for backup in gripping finale

The finale of Happy Valley reached a fiery end after notorious villain Tommy Lee Royce came face-to-face with his nemesis Sergeant Catherine Cawood before setting himself alight at her kitchen table.

The highly-anticipated BBC One finale did not disappoint as James Norton’s character, who had escaped prison where he was serving time for abduction and multiple murders, broke into the home of the show’s protagonist, played by Sarah Lancashire. The dramatic showdown saw the pair engage in a vicious slanging match before Tommy doused himself in petrol and set himself alight in the final episode of the gritty crime drama.

In the final episode, set on Catherine’s last day following 30 years of service in the police, she spots the broken basement window at her home and slips in before discovering Tommy at her kitchen table. But fans of the show weren't impressed with the veteran cop's policing skills and couldn't understand why she didn't call for backup earlier and entered the house without waiting for help from her colleagues on the force.

Twitter user Prospectally2 wrote: "Disappointed ending to #Happyvalley. The supposedly experienced competent police officer, walks alone into her clearly broken-into house to confront a dangerous murderer single-handed. Sometime later calls for backup. Unbelievable and over-emotional."

PabloAllelli agreed, writing: "The last episode of #HappyValley was somewhat let down by some daft writing. When Catherine discovered that her basement window had been broken, she would have called for backup. Other than that though, fantastic, but I was disappointed not to see her fly off in a UFO."

GingerElanor commented: "She's going to go in, isn't she? Not wait sensibly outside and call for for backup. #HappyValley"

Andrew MacPherson added: "Oh, come on, you're Catherine bleedin' Cawood. You know exactly what's happened! BACKUP! #HappyValley"

Fellow Twitter user meggshateseggs concurred, saying: "Catherine babe if something bad happens now then it’s your own fault for not calling for backup. I said what I said. #happyvalley"

Others were equally aghast at how long it took for backup to arrive when she did finally call for it, with janinessharon commenting: "where’s backup? in australia?? HURRY #happyvalley"

Twitter user _TVExtra joked: "Where’s the backup have they gone to the cake shop? #HappyValley"
