Happy Valley's James Norton 'blows minds' as he reveals how dramatic car scene was filmed - and all was not what it seemed

James Norton treated fans to some behind-the-scenes snaps and clips from the third and final series of Happy Valley. The Tommy Lee Royce actor has been helping viewers to get over the end of the hit BBC One crime drama by sharing collections of unseen snaps and video across all three series.

In his latest Instagram post the 37-year-old, who has been widely praised for his portrayal of psychopath Tommy, shared a montage of clips from the gripping car scene in Sunday's finale, which saw killer Tommy fight back to the death after gangster Darius Knezevic decided that he was a liability after helping him to go into hiding when he escaped from court.

Henchmen for the mob boss arrived to silence him for good and ordered him to climb into the boot of their car. After realising what they were up to, he refused to get in the boot and returned to his hideaway house to grab a kitchen knife and insisted on getting in the back.

Viewers saw extreme violence as things turned nasty in the car with Tommy making use of the knife to attack the thugs. Then the bloody battle continued with Tommy being strangled before using a rock to stave in the last remaining mobster, Darius' brother Zeljko.

James posted behind-the-scenes shots as he and his castmates posed against a giant LED screen which was used to film the bloody car scene as it sped along a country road before swerving off course into rolling fields above Luddenden near Halifax. sixatno.5 replied: "I totally believed that this was in the country side."

leahbarker14 applauded: "Love seeing things like this! Please never stop with the Happy Valley posts lol. It’s really softening the blow of it ending." And stephaniadarius gasped: "My gosh just shows how great actors you all are and the talented production team. I really thought the car was rolling down that hill! That scene was so gruesome too, so strange to see you all smiling together!!"

traceycliffe said: "It's so weird seeing the fun you all had filming scenes that had us all on the edge of our sofas." And kat_roberts1989 praised: "Would never have guessed the road scenes weren’t real! So we’ll done!" And the_crystal_bar said: "Well this has blown my mind!!!!!!! I thought it was real."
