Every storyline Happy Valley finale needs to wrap up as fans fear a 'rushed' ending

Happy Valley finally comes to an end this Sunday, almost a decade on from the BBC series premiering back in 2014.

Show bosses have filmed five different endings to keep the climax from being leaked as they're said to have been so concerned about the ending to series three leaking that they've taken drastic action to keep it hush-hush.

Sally Wainwright's crime drama's finale will be slightly longer than usual this weekend, with the running time confirmed as one hour and eight minutes rather than the usual 58 minutes, but fans are worried there isn't enough time to wrap everything up.

The penultimate episode saw fans on the edge of their seats as Catherine Cawood went out looking for Tommy Lee Royce following his escape from prison after insisting she is not going to "sit around on my a**e watching f****ing" telly”.

Spines were sent shivering when the evil killer was seen making contact with his son Ryan Cawood through his games console and tried to persuade the teen to run away with him to Spain.

Fans have hypothesised that the finale will feature a showdown between Tommy Lee and Catherine, but others have questioned whether she will make it to her retirement as the pair resolve their chase.

Here are the questions fans need answers to in next Sunday’s final episode…

1. Who will be the one to kill Tommy?

Will Sergeant Catherine Cawood live to see her retirement (PA)

After Sarah Lancashire's Catherine Cawood is within inches of retiring, fans think she might not be making it out of season three alive - especially if Tommy Lee Royce has anything to do with it.

With Tommy now free from prison thanks to the notorious Knezevices, fans think he could be about to hunt down his arch-nemesis Catherine as he seems hellbent on revenge.

His conversation with Darius about getting a gun put forth the question: what is more important to Tommy than escaping the UK with his son?

Darius even poses that very question, and with a chilling glare, the killer tells him: "Getting even with that b**** is as important as getting to Marbella."

Although his blood-thirsty desire for revenge is strong, Tommy doesn't seem to have a plan in place to exact it.

He told Darius: "I'm going to find her, follow her and then I am going to bide my time and look for an opportunity".

While crooked businessman Darius refused to supply him with a gun, Tommy seems determined to find a way to get to Catherine.

Fans were left stunned the last two times the pair came to blows. Catherine ended up in hospital after being attacked in the street outside his mother's house in the first of the two confrontations.

And it was Tommy who ended up on a stretcher the second time they came face-to-face after the police sergeant attacked him on a canal boat.

Who will come out alive of their third and final confrontation?

Some fans even think a brutal double death could be on the cards. Viewers have voiced that they think it could well be Catherine's ex Richard Cawood, or even evil Tommy himself, who is set for a grim demise thanks to some subtle clues from earlier episodes.

2. Will Ryan betray his grandmother for his father?

Fans watched the chilling moment Tommy made contact with son Ryan at the end of episode five as he memorised his user name and made contact with him on his games console.

Ryan - who had been visiting Tommy in prison over recent months - can be seen in the teaser for the finale being quizzed by officers about his current relationship with his father.

The teenager looks stony-faced as he is asked: "When was the last time you had any contact with Tommy Lee Royce?"

Happy Valley fans will have to wait until Sunday to discover if Ryan keeps mum about his chats with Tommy, but some viewers have faith Catherine's grandson will do the right thing.

Ryan will be quizzed about his father's whereabouts during the finale (BBC)

It's difficult to predict what the teenager will do as the final scenes of the episode showed Ryan telling his Ann: "I get it is complicated, but he is my dad", then moments later told his grandmother he loved her.

At the end of the episode, he stopped her and simply said, "Granny, I love you" making us hope he will ultimately choose her love over his father.

He told his Uncle Daniel that he'd visited his dad because he wanted to "make his own mind up", telling him: "I went to see him, because I wanted to make up my own mind about him. I didn't tell anyone because I knew it would all kick off. I wanted to work out what I thought about him, without other people's opinions."

When Daniel asked what his conclusion was, the schoolboy replied: "I feel sad for him. He was born like that, needing to be so nasty to people."

How could he choose his dad after coming to that realisation? Only time will tell as we wait on the edge of our seats for next Sunday's sure-to-be explosive episode.

3. Where is Alison?

Will Alison be involved when Tommy and Catherine have their final showdown? (BBC)

Alison played a major part in the second series of Happy Valley, thanks to killing her own son after discovering he was murdering sex workers, and has been making cameos in the last series following her release from prison.

She returned during the second episode of the third series, as she helped Catherine work on her jeep ahead of her plans to travel around the world as a retired woman.

Fans have been wondering if Alison may have a bigger role to play as the series comes to an end this Sunday.

4. Will pharmacist Faisal get caught for murder?

Will Faisal crack under the pressure? (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

From the evil plottings of one killer, to the sneaky drama of another. You'd be forgiven for forgetting out the subplot as the drama unfolds within the Cawood family but we're set to learn Faisal's fate in the finale too.

In a moment of horrendous violence and rage, Faisal (Amit Shah) killed Joanna Hepworth (Mollie Winnard) and covered up his tracks, knowing that the finger would likely point at her husband Rob Hepworth (Mark Stanley).

The storyline escalated last night when Rob report the murder of his wife Joanna to the police, with Catherine instantly pointing the finger at him.

But we know it’s pharmacist Faisal who bludgeoned Joanna after an argument got heated and he administered her a lethal dose of ketamine before stuffing her body into a suitcase.

Will Joanna's real killer be revealed? (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

As police descended on the Hepworth house, Faisal was seen beginning to crack and having flashbacks of the murder.

His wife and children were spying on all the commotion and rightly speculated there was a dead body in the house.

With Detective Superintendent Andy Shepherd not 100% convinced that Rob should be their prime suspect, he tells his team he wants to find out who had been supplying the housewife with anti-depressants.

And as the drug-dealing pharmacist is haunted by visions of the killing, fans have been left wondering if he will crack under the pressure and come clean.

5. Will Catherine and Clare ever repair their relationship?

Catherine confronted Clare (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

One of season three's most poignant scenes came when Catherine confronted Clare in the cafe after discovering she was driving Ryan to the prison to meet his dad.

The betrayal the police sergeant was almost beyond words as she laid into her sister after following her.

Last night's episode showed that any glimmer of hope for forgiveness is still a long way off, but she did check in on her to ensure she was safe after Tommy's escape.

But the sisters came to blows again when Clare suggested they go and hide at Nevison's house in Marjorca.

Catherine couldn't contain her rage at the proposition and cruelly told her sister: "You are the last person I would go on holiday with, you and that moron you spend your days with.

Will the sisters make up? (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

"You and me have got nothing in common, your bore me. You have this idiotic, dependent personality.

"You let yourself be talked into doing something so repugnant and so offensive to me by him. He is nothing. He is an empty vessel, so are you. I guess that is why it works.

"I am going back to work, I don't want to be here. That b***** is still out there and I am not going to be just sitting here on my arse watching telly."

Clare didn't say a word as her sister laid into her and it's left us wondering if their relationship will ever be able to recover from this.

6. Will Ivan get married?

In episode five, it was Tuesday which meant Ivan was due to get married the next day.

But the mobster and his sidekick Matija Jankovic decided to forgo last minute wedding preparations to go off in pursuit of another money-making mission.

Matija tells boss Ivan that he doesn't think it is a good idea, but Ivan wouldn't listen and they were last seen driving off in search of money.

Viewers are yet to find out the identity of Ivan's fiancé and fans have speculated that we could get a shock when we find out who it is in the finale.

With the wedding likely to form a big part of the final episode, we could see the series-ending drama unfold at the ceremony and we'll have to wait and see if Ivan does eventually get hitched.

7. Will Tekeli drop his complaint?

Catherine has to handle a complaint alongside trying to capture her daughter's rapist (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

Another random subplot from the third series of Happy Valley saw an ongoing situation regarding one of Catherine’s officer, PC Tekeli getting dramatic during the penultimate episode.

After a practical joke about UFO liaison specialist went a little too far, PC Tekeli lodged an official complaint against Catherine days before her retirement.

Will the complaint go further or will the force be too busy trying to capture Tommy and the saga never mentioned again?

8. Will we find out why Poppy doesn't take her coat off?

Happy Valley fans have speculated why little Poppy Hepworth is always wearing her big overcoat in the house, with some heartbreaking theories shared online.

In the latest episode, Poppy’s dad could be seen ordering her to "take off the coat" as she once again kept it on while walking around the house.

Many viewers have taken to social media to speculate why the youngster seems so attached to the jacket.

Taking to Reddit, one fan wrote: “I reckon it’s like a comfort blanket to her,” as another echoed: “It's just trauma and her way of coping. A safety blanket.

“She's terrified. A psychologist on the police force will hopefully spot it put it together and they get a picture of what's been happening in that household.”

8. Will Catherine's retirement dream come true and will Ryan pass his GCSE English and Maths?

Fans are hoping to see Catherine's retirement dreams come true (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

We all want a happy ending, right? There's so much to pack into the finale episode. The penultimate one ended on a fictional Tuesday, the wedding is set to take play Wednesday, Catherine is due to retire on Thursday and Tommy is planning to leave the country on Monday.

Fans are hoping to see Catherine's retirement dreams come true and she gets to have her leaving 'do with the £2,000 retirement collection from her colleagues.

Alison has her Land Rover ready for her overland retirement trip and viewers are hoping she gets to hang up her handcuffs in peace - preferably after catching evil Tommy!

We'll be waiting with bated breath to fins out if Ryan chooses between his father and runs away to Spain, or his grandmother and gets to finished his GCSEs and goes on to fulfil his apprenticeship dream.

The final ever episode of Happy Valley airs on BBC1 on Sunday, February 5 at 9pm.
