Rongali Bihu is a major festival of Assam. A festival of huge cultural significance, Rongali Bihu name has been derived from the word Rong which means happiness and celebration in Assamese. It is also known as Bohag Bihu, signifying the first month of the year which is Bohag.
Rongali Bihu is the Assamese new year. This year Rongali Bihu will be celebrated on April 14. This day also marks the beginning of new year in West Bengal, Odisha, Manipur, Nepal, Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.
Assam celebrates three Bihu in a year: the other two are Kati Bihu which is celebrated in October and Magh Bihu which is observed in January.
Rongali Bihu is celebrated for 7 days in the state.
The first day is called Garu Bihu and is dedicated to cattle which is extremely crucial for agriculture.
The second day is Manuh Bihu where traditional dishes are prepared.
The third day is Guxai Bihu where household dieties are worshipped.
The fourth day is Taator Bihu, where the handlooms are worshipped.
The fifth day is Nangolor Bihu, which is the Bihu for farm equipment.
The sixth day is Gharosia Jibar Bihu, for the domesticated animals.
The last day is Chera Bihu.
Bihu is celebrated with fun and excitement in Assam. People engage in merrymaking, traditional food items like pitha, ghila pitha, poka mithoi, murir laru are prepared on Bihu which are shared by family, friends and neighbours with much joy.
