Lohri, a harvest festival, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in North India every year. The festival is usually celebrated in the month of Paush or Magh according to the Hindu calendar, falling on a day before Makar Sankranti. And so, in 2022 Lohri will be celebrated on January 13 majorly by Hindus and Sikhs. While Lohri is a harvest festival, it also marks the end of the winter season (unofficially); it is also a day for people to get together, offer prayers, gratitude and seek blessings for a good harvest from mother nature. On this day, people celebrate by dressing up in new clothes, singing folk songs, and tales. Kids visit their relatives and neighbours and get 'Lohri Gifts' in return. Families and friends get together near a bonfire in the evening, and they offer winter special food items and delicacies like popcorn, revari and gajak to the pyre. The pyre symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and the end of negativity in our lives. After the religious ceremony is over, prashad is distributed to everyone who is present. In families where important life events like marriage or childbirth have happened, the festival is celebrated in a grand manner.
But due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this year too Lohri might not be celebrated in a grand way as people are expected to follow Covid protocols and social distancing. But that shouldn't dampen the festival spirit.
