Happy homecoming for Ayr Sea Cadets as group set to make emotional return to town

Ayr Sea Cadets are to make a welcome return to their home town.

For the last 12 months, the group has been based at Annbank village hall.

But they have now been offered the chance to move back into the heart of Ayr.

A spokesperson for the group issued a statement on social media, saying: “After nearly a full year parading at the Annbank community hall, Ayr Sea Cadets will be returning to the town of Ayr!

“We are extremely thankful to the team at Annbank village hall for taking us in during our hour of need!

“If it wasn’t for them, the unit would not have been able to continue as it has over the last year.

“We have been offered the use of the halls at the Auld Kirk Church, just off the High Street. We will be continuing to parade on a Tuesday evening for now and will be in the new location from July 19.

“We continue to recruit new cadets as well and this new location gives us more space to expand our numbers whilst working towards a long term home for the unit, so if anyone is interested please get in touch.”

Established in 1856, the sea cadets were created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme.

Traditionally, old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the unit building.

Today, 14,000 young people are based in 400 units in towns, cities and ports across the UK, as they challenge themselves and develop new skills like sailing, boating and rock climbing – supported by 9,000 volunteers.
