Happy Diwali: UK leaders’ tributes to the festival of lights

Hindus across the UK and around the world are celebrating Diwali today, October 24.

The five-day festival of lights is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil and will be celebrated until October 27.

However, October 24 is the most important day of the festival.

Diwali is a particularly historic day in the UK this year, with Rishi Sunak becoming the first British Asian and Hindu prime minister.

Political leaders and MPs are celebrating Diwali with messages of support to their constituents who observe the festival.

Happy Diwali messages

The Royal Family said: “Wishing all those who celebrate, a very happy Diwali, bringing happiness, prosperity and joy to you and all your family.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “Diwali reminds us of the importance of hope and resilience.

“As you light your diyas and lamps, we reflect on the lightness that dispels the darkness, and hope for peaceful and prosperous future. On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish you all a Happy Diwali.”

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford said: “Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating the festival of lights in Wales and around the world.

“Diwali celebrates triumph of hope over despair. Together, we will deliver on our hopes and create a fairer and more equal future for us all. Have a happy and joyful celebration.”

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said: “A very happy Diwali to everyone celebrating in Scotland and across the world.”

Conservative MP Priti Patel said: “Happy Diwali The Hindu Festival of Light, is an auspicious and joyous festival. It is a time for self-reflection, family, friends and service to others. I wish everyone a very blessed and happy Diwali!”

MP and former Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, said: “Wishing everybody in Islington and beyond a happy Diwali. May this joyous festival bring peace, light and love to your family and friends.”
