Wrexham’s suddenly famous football team is inviting fans to sign an open birthday card for one of its owners, Ryan Reynolds.
The Canadian actor turned 47 on Monday, but as well as being congratulated by his Hollywood buddies, he has won the adoring support of a community in north Wales.
Reynolds took over Wrexham alongside Rob McElhenney in February 2021 and has invested in the club to the point of their promotion from the non-league. Their exploits have been mapped in the documentary Welcome to Wrexham.
Wrexham fan James Grundy started the card which he plans to deliver to the club later on Monday. "I am a (mainly remote) fan and have enjoyed following the team’s progress closely,” Mr Grundy, who lives in Reading, told The Leader.
He added: “I think many football fans like me love a good story like this and feel grateful to Rob and Ryan for the positive effect their investment had, not just on Wrexham but the whole of the National League too!
"I wanted to celebrate the most joyful, positive story in football at a time when the world feels pretty bleak. And of course, just as a way to say thanks to Ryan (and Rob) without being able to speak to them in person.”
The online card can be viewed online at Kindeo, and messages will be taken throughout Monday before being shared with the actor-cum-football tycoon.
The website allows users to upload a written message, or a video or picture to mark the occasion.
Wrexham are currently fourth in League 2 after 14 games played and in with a shout of a second successive promotion.
Their rags-to-riches story is being told on FX and the second series is currently showing.
Mr Grundy added: "Rob and Ryan’s passion for the club and town is infectious. It has definitely rubbed off on me.
“I hope people like this card as a way to say thanks and repay some of the inspiration and happy times Ryan’s fostered - everyone needs a little happiness these days!"
