Happy Birthday Ranveer Singh: The man who’s here to break stereotypes

Ranveer Singh (HT Photo)

Ranveer Singh is not what you expect from a Bollywood actor. The star who turns 30 today surprised fans and the industry alike when his debut Band Baja Baarat hit the bull’s eye in 2010.

There were some who, even then, maintained that Singh’s film was flash in the pan. He went ahead and proved them wrong 10 times with roles in films such as Lootera, Dil Dhadakne Do, Kill Dil and many more. He is at present shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani opposite Deepika Padukone.

Ranveer not only surprised us with his Yash Raj debut that worked wonders on the box office, he continues to astonish us daily with his colourful dressing sense. And the choices he has made as an actor only prove that he ain’t here to tread on the path that everyone takes. He is not a larger-than-life hero with all the related baggage – he’s the man on the street with real-life problems and their everyday solutions.

A hand sling doesn't make Ranveer Singh any less of an enthusiast.

Even his choice of advertisements has left Bollywood gasping for breath. With his Do The Rex rap and Rupa frontline ad (that takes clear digs at an ad by Saif Ali Khan), Ranveer has proved that he isn’t taking up advertising projects simply for the money.

Ranveer’s characters have quite a few traits that suggest the actor is not only reading his scripts carefully but also wants to ensure that he is closer to the audience’s heart than what the Shah Rukhs and Salmans of the age play. Here, we take a look at some of these characteristics of his onscreen persona.

1. No unrealistic moral high grounds
Be it Bittoo Sharma from Band Baja Baarat or Dev in Kill Dil, Ranveer’s characters are practical and are not guided by unrealistic morals.  While Bittoo is fine ditching the woman who believed in him because a relationship with her is not good for business, Dev chooses to leave Bhaiyaji (Govinda) -- the man he owed his life to -- despite having all the respect and love for him.

2. Class no bar
If there is one classless-classy hero in B-town these days, it’s Ranveer Singh. He has brought back street style in fashion – and no, we ain’t talking only about his looks. His characters defy clichés of any kind and make their own style. He plays a rebel, in fashion and in life, who is guided only by his own code and not what the society asks of him.

3. Perfection is boring
Ranveer never plays the ‘perfect man’ characters that Bollywood usually worships. They are unthankful (Gunday, Band Baja Baarat), deceitful (Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl) and even treacherous (Lootera) – all this when he is not even playing the quintessential grey hero.

4. Bringing Govinda back
Be it his films or offscreen appearances, Ranveer makes his own style statement with floral shirts, shiny trousers and flashy sunglasses. And what’s more, manages to carry that look with elan.

5. Deepika Padukone

She is a Bollywood style icon, a study in elegance. He’s the opposite of that. They make a great pair, and we mean both real and reel life. We rest our case.
