The fifth day of the five-day-long festival of Diwali marks Bhai Dooj. On this day, Hindus celebrate the beautiful bond shared between brothers and sisters. Bhai Dooj is celebrated two days after Diwali, on the second Tithis of Shukla Paksh in the month of Kartik as per the Hindu calendar. The story behind celebrating Bhai Dooj goes like this: Yamraj, who hadn't met his sister Yamuna for a very long time, decided to pay a surprise visit to her at her home. Meeting Yama after so long, Yamuna is elated; she prepares delicious dishes in his honour and in return Yama showers her with gifts. He also promises to meet her soon and asks her if she would has any wishes. To this Yamuna makes Yama promise to ome visit her this time every year and so, Bhai Dooj is celebrated in honour of this speacial brother-sister bond.
On this day, brothers visit their sisters and give them gifts. Sisters in return apply vermilion tikka on the brother's forehead, and pray for their overall well-being and protection from all sorts of evils. They also offer their brother delicious home-cooked meals. This year the auspicious day of Bhai Dooj falls on November 6, 2021; it also marks the conclusion of Diwali celebrations.
