Baisakhi, also known as Vaisakhi, is a harvest festival celebrated in India, particularly in the state of Punjab. It is celebrated on April 13th or 14th every year. Baisakhi marks the formation of the Khalsa, the Sikh community, in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh. It is seen as a celebration of spring harvest. This year, Baisakhi will be celebrated on April 14, 2023 (Friday).
Baisakhi is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm every year. The day typically begins with people visiting Gurudwaras-- the holy places of worship for Sikhs, for special prayers and kirtans (spiritual hymns). Many Sikhs also participate in processions known as Nagar Kirtans, where the Sikh holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, is carried in a beautifully decorated palanquin.
On Baisakhi, langar or the community meal is prepared and offered for free to all visitors, regardless of their caste, religion, or background. Langar promotes the values of equality, humility, and community service, which are all important principles of Sikhism.
Baisakhi is also a time for vibrant cultural celebrations, including traditional folk dances such as Bhangra and Gidda, which are performed with great enthusiasm by men and women, respectively.
