Hana Horka, a popular Czech folk singer, died last weekend after she caught Covid on purpose because she thought it meant she could avoid having the vaccine and be “free” again.
Her son, Jan Rek, lashed out at anti-vaxxers in central Europe for influencing his mother and her decisions.
Horka, 57, was lead singer for Czech folk group Asonance an Jan explained that he and his father, who were both vaccinated, caught Covid over the Christmas holidays.
Horka purposely remained in close contact with them both, which led to her catching the virus.
Jan also revealed his mother’s final tragic moments before she passed on Sunday.
The 57-year-old remained in good enough health on the morning she died to get dressed for a walk.
But she complained her back was hurting and went to lie down in her bedroom.
In an interview with the BBC, Jan said: “In 10 minutes it was all over. She choked to death.”
Horka is thought to have believed that if she caught the virus, she would not need the vaccine.
Jan explained that while his mother was unvaccinated, she did not subscribe to any of the conspiracy theories around the Covid vaccines.
Jan said: “Her philosophy was that she was more OK with the idea of catching Covid than getting vaccinated. Not that we would get microchipped or anything like that.”
She celebrated upon learning she had contracted the virus.
Her family said she was “happy” to have Covid because she thought it meant she could obtain a health pass to visit venues those without proof of vaccination or recent recovery are blocked from going to.
On her social media just two days before she tragically died, she wrote: “I'm very happy about it because in this way I would be able to start having a "free" life like everyone else, and go back to the cinema, on vacation, to take a sauna, to the theater.
“I survived… It was intense. So now there will be the theatre, sauna, a concert… and an urgent trip to the sea.”
Jan was left raging with anti-vaxxers in his country who he blamed for her death.
On Facebook, following his mother’s death, he wrote: “You took my mother, who based all her arguments on your basis.
“I despise you, you are an absolute waste.”
