Hampton Morris, the current world record holder in the men’s 61-kilogram division, made history by winning a bronze medal in the men’s weightlifting final on Wednesday, marking the first Olympic medal in that event for Team USA since 1984.
Morris, who set the clean and jerk world record earlier this year in April, secured the bronze with a total score of 298 points, finishing 12 points behind China’s Li Fabin, the gold medalist in the competition.
Competing in his first Olympic Games, Morris has become the youngest lifter to represent the United States since Cheryl Haworth participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
