Shoppers were shocked to discover a Hamilton supermarket and petrol station closed with emergency services in attendance over the weekend.
Staff at the Morrisons store and filling station were evacuated on Saturday night after reports of a cylinder gas leak at the premises.
It is understood residents in nearby homes and flats were also directed to a safe area for almost two hours, while one fire crew and a number of police officers worked quickly to secure the scene and handle the situation.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live : "We were alerted at 9.10pm on Saturday, June 18, to reports of a cylinder leak at retail premises on New Park Street, Hamilton.
"Operations Control mobilised one appliance and special resources to the scene to assist emergency service partners to make the area safe.
"There were no reported casualties."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a report of a gas leak at the Morrisons filling station at New Park Street, Hamilton at 9:15pm on Saturday.
“Police attendance was required to provide support with road closures and to reassure local residents. The situation was made safe and officers stood down at 10:50pm.”
A spokeswoman for Morrisons said: "We can confirm our Hamilton store was temporarily closed for a short period on Saturday as a safety precaution.
"The store and petrol station are now fully operating as normal."
