Hamilton man raises charity cash by completing first leg of five-step challenge

Hamilton’s Jamie Neill has raised over £1000 for charity by completing the first leg of a five-step challenge.

The former international badminton player and coach embarked on the West Highland Way, completing a 96-mile hike over five days.

Jamie has set himself a ‘5 for 35’ challenge to raise money for charity, and this one was for Alzheimer Scotland, in memory of his late uncle Bill Neill, who himself was an accomplished badminton player.

During the five days, over £300 was donated, taking Jamie’s total up to £1125.

Jamie said: “I completed the 96-mile West Highland Way walk between May 1-5, starting in Milngavie and finishing in Fort William.

“The whole adventure is a test of both physical and mental endurance, having to walk over 20 miles a day for three of the days in order to complete it in five, but the reward of the Scottish scenery and feeling of achievement was worth it.

“I was walking to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland, who support action for dementia, which my grampa Bill suffered from in the last two years of his life.

“With that in mind, I was able to stay positive throughout the long days, and know that some people experience immense difficulties with their health, and that my discomfort was only temporary.

“I used hostels, bunkhouses and my own tent to sleep in, and each overnight location was very welcoming and comfortable.

“I met people from all over the world, who were enjoying our countryside.”

Jamie added: “My final day of walking became a bit painful in the legs, and I have immense respect to the people who run and cycle the route, as well as the many walkers doing it for their own reasons.

“In hindsight, I would perhaps take longer to walk it in future, so I could enjoy the pace a bit more and relax.

“However, I’m delighted to have completed it and I’m very appreciative of the amazing support that was sent my way throughout the journey.

“Over £300 was donated within the five days itself and now totals £1125. People seem to be inspired and that’s a big aim of my challenges.”

The next leg of the challenge is Bravehearts Boxing Gym’s Scotsathlon event on Saturday, May 25, which involves a 1.5 mile swim across Loch Lomond, 7.5 mile hike up Ben Lomond’s Ptarmigan Ridge, and a 50-mile cycle around Ben Lomond.
