Colin McGowan admits the criticism levelled at him during his tenure at Hamilton Accies has been hard to take.
The former Raith Rovers director has been at the club for over 15 years but became the sole custodian last year after Ronnie MacDonald’s departure from the club.
Throughout his tenure, the club’s 67-year-old chief executive has been faced with critics, with some of it being a lack of understanding for the football requirements Accies need.
With his job purely based on the commercial side of things at New Douglas Park, it’s something that confuses McGowan.
He hopes that there comes a time where the board and the fans can work together in unison to support the team on a Saturday. And is willing to meet with supports to explain his point.
Speaking of the criticism, he said: “I could do without the negativity but I do enjoy my job. I would like supporters who would cheer for the board.
“Let’s fight together. The hardest thing I find is some of the negative stuff. You are powerless over what some may shout. But if they aren’t armed with the facts...
“Would winning every week and playing attractive football increase season ticket sales? I don’t know, because 10 years in the Premiership didn’t.
“I don’t fully understand the supporters to an extent. I do my best to give them the best stadium, make sure players are paid on time and ensure the stadium is well-maintained.
“Every penny we have supports the football team. The football club needs every penny. There’s only so many hours in a day. The football world thinks we are amazing. I struggle to understand why (there is criticisms of him). I’ll meet with any fan, at any time.
“I’ll go over every figure. It would love the supporters to love their club and respect what their directors are doing. I hope that in my lifetime, that happens. There’s nothing I can do about people not wanting to see the truth.
“If people want to say season ticket numbers are because of me, that isn’t true, as history doesn’t tell us that. They have dropped. I don’t know if it’s the pandemic or being in a Premiership relegation battle, turning up and not getting many victories.
“I have not got a lot of time to focus on the physical side of football, as I am that focused on bringing in enough money to have that.”
