Hamilton care home worker to face fear of heights in bungee jump for residents

A Lanarkshire carer who is terrified of heights is bungee jumping with two colleagues to raise money for vulnerable pensioners.

Debbie Christison is facing her greatest fear by taking on the Garry Bridge bungee jump in Killiecrankie, Perth an Kinross, at the end of July. The care worker will be joined and egged on by her two colleagues, Kristyn McWhirter and Senga Arbuckle.

The trio are taking on the huge challenge to raise money for their workplace, Avonbridge Care Home in Hamilton. All money raised will go towards the Residents' Comfort Fund which will help pay for trips, entertainment and additional activities previously stripped away during the pandemic.

Debbie admits she is scared of what lies ahead but wants to help raise what she can for the residents she looks after.

She told Glasgow Live: "I am scared of heights, but it’s really only the going up that frightens me. I am fine coming down - but I’ve not tested that by jumping off a bridge yet.

“It’s too late to back out now, and the ladies will never let me live it down if I don’t manage it. Our residents are relying on us to help boost the fund and take them on some fabulous days out over the summer.”

Avonbridge bosses are humbled by the brave trio's efforts.

Kelly O'Neil, activities co-ordinator at Avonbridge care home, said: “I’m really grateful that the care staff agreed to take part in the bungee jump. We always have lots of activities going on in the home, but we do fundraise ourselves for those little extras.

“We usually do lots of fundraising throughout the year for the Residents Comfort Fund, but it’s been difficult with the Covid restrictions. Now that those are lifted and we’re doing more and more activities with residents.

"We’re bringing back our Summer Fayre and we have some bingo sessions lined up. It’s going to be a busy summer.”
