Blantyre Vics boss John Gibson says his side gave a good account of themselves in a pre-season work-out as Hamilton Accies ran out 3-0 winners at the KG Stadium on Saturday.
Gibson says preparations are going well for his side, and he has 12-13 players signed up, while looking at others.
Vics had two trialist goalkeepers in their line-up for the PG McGilvray Memorial Cup match, and Gibson reckons he’s close to the squad he needs to challenge in the West of Scotland League First Division.
On Saturday’s game, Gibson said: “The result is not the be-all and end-all, they’re a Championship side that has just been relegated, they have some really good players, so just to go and compete and work hard against them is what it’s all about.
“We did that well and gave a good account of ourselves, so I’m pleased with that. It was a good work-out for the boys and I really appreciate Hamilton Accies bringing their first-team here.
“In the first half it was a good for us before they brought on their young boys. I was delighted with how we shaped up. Some of the goals were a wee bit poor, but other than that the boys did well and worked really hard, which is good, because it’s about getting minutes into the legs.”
Gibson has more test to look forward. They’ve lined up several friendlies, including against the likes of Darvel and Lesmahagow, starting with Forth Wanderers last night (Wednesday) and at Beith on Saturday.
“We’ve got a good schedule ,” he said. “We’ve worked hard, so we’ll take it from here and we’ll build up this week for the games ahead.
“I have 12 or 13 signed, I have a few to look at as well, and there are still a few that I’m trying to bring in, so it’s going well.
“It’s a tough campaign in the West of Scotland First Division – it’s about getting your squad right and trying to compete against teams that have big budgets.”
