Hamilton Accies boss gutted by Hibs heartbreak, but takes positives from draw

Hamilton Women’s head coach Gary Doctor insists his side can take plenty of encouragement from their 2-2 draw with Hibs - even if it did end in late heartbreak.

The SWPL 1 club were looking to bounce back from a 6-0 humbling against Celtic, which came off the back of an impressive 1-0 Lanarkshire derby win away at Motherwell.

Lauren Evans and Josephine Giard netted for Doctor’s side after falling behind to an Amy Gallacher effort.

Heartbreak was to come in second half stoppage time with Michaela McAlonie scoring to snatch a draw for Hibs.

Accies remain bottom of the league and seven points off ninth-placed Hearts with three games to go. They take on Partick Thistle this Sunday.

Doctor said: “I thought we played really well and it was a great response from the way we got beat against Celtic.

“The two poor moments from us across the entire game cost us two goals. We made some really good chances too. I am frustrated that we’ve not won from a winning position late in the game.

“But I am pleased to see where we are moving towards in terms of improvement. The players are feeling it as well. If you’d offered us 2-2 pre-match, we wouldn’t have argued much about it.

“Hibs are a strong team but there is a feeling of what might have been. We missed good chances to score in each half but we were just unlucky.

“We want to show we’re good enough to compete at this level and I think we have certainly shown we are. We just haven’t taken enough points.

“The players importantly feel like they belong at this level as well.”
