Hamilton 2, Airdrie 1 (agg 2-2): Rae is the hero as Airdrie win on penalties

Airdrie won promotion to the Championship with a dramatic 6-5 penalty shoot-out win over Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

The sides couldn't be separated after 120 minutes of football, but when Josh Rae saved Dan O'Reilly's penalty, it meant that Cammy Ballantyne's spot-kick won it for the Diamonds 6-5.

It looked like sub Jean-Pierre Tiehi had won the game for Hamilton after blasting in from close range in 80 minutes, but Gabby McGill levelled the tie on aggregate as he slammed in a last-gasp goal to hand Airdrie a lifeline.

Connor Smith had put Accies ahead midway through the first half with a goal that was slightly against the run of play, but when Tiehi fired them ahead in the tie with 10 minutes to go, the hosts were well on top.

But the Diamonds came roaring back and McGill handed them a lifeline, slamming in the rebound when his own shot was well parried by Jamie Smith.

The first period of extra-time ended goal-less though Dylan McGowan had a shot saved on the line and Calum Gallagher headed narrowly over.

Airdrie started the better of the sides and looked lively early on, but Hamilton took the lead slightly against the run of play and it gave them a real boost, with a few chances thereafter to take the lead in the tie.

Airdrie made a lot of good running, but the closest they went was with two free kicks by player-boss Rhys McCabe, with one smacking off the top of the crossbar and the other forcing a terrific save from Jamie Smith.

The second half saw these sides more or less cancel each other out, with few chances created at either end, though they both looked lively enough.

But Tiehi struck to give Accies a priceless lead.

Hamilton Accies head coach John Rankin made two changes to the side that lost at New Broomfield on Wednesday night, with Matty Shiels and Lewis Spence in for Lucas De Bolle and Dario Zanatta, both of whom were on the bench.

Airdrie player/boss Rhys McCabe also made two changes to the side that took a slender 1-0 lead into this afternoon's showdown, as Euan Deveney and Charlie Telfer came in for suspended Craig Watson and Justin Devenny.

Airdrie created the first real chance in 13 minutes when McCabe's free kick from wide on the right landed at Callum Fordyce's feet, but his dipping shot dropped over the bar.

When Hamilton failed to clear their lines in 20 minutes, Telfer had the first shot on target, but it was a comfortable save for Jamie Smith to stop his rising strike.

But Smith put Hamilton in front in 23 minutes, collecting Reghan Tumilty's pass before checking inside a defender and slamming a low shot into the left corner.

Lewis Smith got good control of the ball on the right wing in 28 minutes and checked inside two defenders, but his cross was too high for Shiels at the far post.

Dan O'Reilly's foul on McCabe just outside the right corner of the box in 30 minutes gave them a chance to regain the advantage, but McCabe's free kick cannoned off the top of the bar.

McCabe was in the mood, and Jamie Smith was forced to slap another free kick away from under his bar, from the left flank in 37 minutes

Adam Frizzell sent Callum Smith racing down the left and his cross was well cut out by keeper Smith, ahead of Gallagher, in 40 minutes.

Hamilton tried to build on their lead in 55 minutes but Mimnaugh's corner from the left was headed over by Shiels.

Tumilty had a shot well parried by Rae in 67 minutes, with Connor Smith's rebound deflected narrowly wide of the left post corner.

But Hamilton took the lead in 80 minutes when sub Tiehi slammed in Lewis Smith's cutback from close range, two minutes after coming on.

The striker should have scored a second shortly afterwards, but screwed his shot narrowly wide.

But Airdrie levelled the tie on aggregate in the last minute as McGill smashed in the rebound when his own shot was parried by Smith.

Euan Deveney nearly won it for Airdrie in second half stoppage time, but saw his shot from just outside the box slapped over by Smith.

Into extra-time we went, and two minutes in, Connor Smith saw a shot deflected over the Airdrie bar.

Airdrie's Calum Gallagher headed narrowly wide of the left post from a Justin Devenny cross seven minutes in.

Mimnaugh's corner on the right was headed off the bar by Dylan McGowan in 100 minutes.

Callum Fordyce headed a Devenny corner past the right post in 103 minutes.

At the other end, Winter headed narrowly past the right post from a Mimnaugh corner on the same side.

McGowan had a shot brilliantly saved on the line by Rae in first-half stoppage time of extra-time, as Accies pushed for a winner.

But Airdrie passed up a gilt-edged chance to regain their aggregate lead in the final minute of stoppage time when Gallagher headed a Deveney cross just over.

McCabe saw a free kick deflected over the bar from just outside the left corner of the box in 113 minutes.

Mimnaugh tried to bag a winner for Hamilton with two minutes left, but Rae saved well.

Fordyce looked to have pulled Martin down in the box with a minute eft, but referee Craig Napier wasn't interested.

In second-half stoppage time Tiehi had a chance to win it for Hamilton with only Rae to beat, but could only find the side-netting.
