Hamas To Release 33 Hostages In Ceasefire Agreement

People demand the immediate release of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas, in Tel Aviv

According to Israeli officials, Hamas is set to release 33 hostages as part of an emerging ceasefire agreement being finalized in Doha. The hostages were taken during attacks on October 7, 2023, with at least 34 confirmed dead among the 94 hostages held by Hamas and its allies.

Israel believes that most of the 33 hostages to be released are alive, but the bodies of deceased hostages may also be included in the initial release during the proposed 42-day ceasefire period. Negotiators are optimistic about reaching an agreement, with plans for immediate implementation upon finalization.

Proximity talks to address any remaining issues are scheduled to take place in Doha, with the involvement of the hostages' families in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The release of the 33 hostages marks the first phase of the agreement, with negotiations for the second phase aimed at ending the conflict set to commence after 16 days of implementation.

Under the current proposals, Israeli forces are expected to maintain a presence along the Philadelphi Corridor and establish a buffer zone inside Gaza along the border with Israel. The width of the buffer zone remains a point of contention, with Hamas advocating for a smaller zone compared to Israel's request for a wider area.

Additionally, Palestinian prisoners responsible for killing Israelis will be relocated to Gaza or abroad, rather than being released into the West Bank. The progress in negotiations was highlighted by a recent meeting between Israeli intelligence agency Mossad Director and mediators in Doha, signaling a potential breakthrough in the talks.

While both sides are yet to provide official responses, there is optimism surrounding the prospect of a deal being reached soon. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed hope but remained cautious, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring the safe return of all hostages.
