On Thursday morning, senior US officials received word and photographs from Israeli counterparts suggesting that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar might be dead. The Israeli military worked to confirm the body found in northern Rafah was indeed Sinwar, with US officials feeling confident based on the images provided.

However, US officials are cautious about predicting the implications for the region following Sinwar's death. Hamas operatives are expected to regroup, Israel may retaliate against Iran for a recent missile attack, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will need to strategize the next steps in the Gaza conflict.

Netanyahu's conversation with Biden was brief, with the prime minister emphasizing the importance of freeing hostages from Gaza while insisting on terms acceptable to him to end the war.
