As a ceasefire brought calm to Gaza's ruined cities, Hamas emerged from the rubble, firmly in control of the coastal territory. The militant group has survived 15 months of war with Israel, remaining a dominant force in Gaza. With humanitarian aid promised as part of the ceasefire deal, the Hamas-run government plans to coordinate distribution to the people of Gaza.

Despite Israel's military efforts, Hamas has retained power, a central aim of the conflict. The recent handover of Israeli hostages to the Red Cross showcased Hamas fighters in a show of strength. Throughout Gaza, Hamas police reappeared, maintaining order even in heavily damaged areas.

Hamas, a deeply rooted movement in Palestinian society, has a long history of insurgency and political control. It has weathered previous conflicts with Israel, steadily enhancing its capabilities and maintaining power in Gaza.

The recent war saw significant casualties and destruction in Gaza, with thousands displaced and neighborhoods reduced to rubble. While Israel targeted Hamas leaders and fighters, civilian casualties were high, leading to potential recruitment for Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's stance against Palestinian statehood has limited alternatives to Hamas in Gaza. Critics argue for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the need for a viable path to ending the occupation.

As the ceasefire holds, the future remains uncertain. Netanyahu has threatened further military action if goals are not met, while Hamas demands a lasting truce and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The cycle of conflict and devastation persists, with no clear resolution in sight.
