Hamas has reportedly approved an Israeli list of 34 hostages to be exchanged in a potential ceasefire agreement. While the Israeli government denied receiving the list directly from Hamas, negotiations are ongoing regarding the release of Palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange for the hostages.
The release of the hostages is said to be contingent on reaching an agreement on Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire. However, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has cast doubt on the report, stating that Hamas has yet to provide a formal list of hostages.
Recent indirect negotiations for a ceasefire-for-hostages deal have resumed in Doha, with slow progress reported so far. White House Middle East adviser Brett McGurk and Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer are engaged in discussions to facilitate the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Hamas released a video of a 19-year-old hostage, increasing pressure on Israel to reach a ceasefire deal. As of December 5, Hamas was still holding 100 hostages in Gaza, with at least 36 believed to be deceased.
While negotiations continue, Israeli attacks in Gaza persist, with recent strikes resulting in civilian casualties. A residential building in northern Gaza was targeted, leading to the deaths of 12 family members and leaving others trapped under the rubble.
Local Palestinians expressed fear over escalating violence in the area, with concerns of continuous bombings and drone attacks. Gaza's healthcare system is overwhelmed, with hospitals struggling to cope with the influx of casualties.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant death toll and a high number of injuries, underscoring the urgent need for a ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
