Not everyone wants a big, white wedding, with the organ echoing as you glide up the aisle. How about something at the other end of the spectrum with a bit of heavy metal music thrown in for good measure? That’s what one bride has opted for and she is delighted with her Halloween-themed celebration.
For many Halloween is a once-a-year occasion to dress up and go trick or treating. But for Kirsty Boultbee, 44, a customer service assistant from Swadlincote, Derbyshire, it is a very special day because she is obsessed with the scary event. Fortunately, it is something she has in common with her new husband, Chris, 45.
It was only natural, therefore, that In keeping with their mutual love of Halloween, their wedding day was also suitably spooky in tone, with lots of black, spiders, skulls, pumpkins and heavy metal tunes.
Despite the ‘dark’ themes of the day, Kirsty wore a white dress with black lace on it, with a black and purple bouquet with tiny skulls attached. While her wedding shoes had ‘until death’ written on the side.
True to form, their wedding reception was complete with bats, pumpkins and of course, skull ornaments, and their wedding cake was a purple and black skull.
"It was decorated with a skull bride and groom – and it was such a nice surprise, I had a few tears in my eyes," she says.
Kirsty had her nails decorated with a cobweb design and the couple’s wedding rings had skulls around the band engraved with, ‘until death’. The groomsmen had purple flowers with little spiders.
And of course, the wedding day, which took place in 2020 had to be on October 31.
The couple admit it might seem a bit odd, but to them it is perfectly normal and true to them and their interests. "It's always been a part of our personalities," said Kirsty.
"As we love spooky things and rock music, as well skulls and anything black – everything surrounding Halloween brings us so much excitement.
"It's not only for ourselves, as it makes our marriage exciting because we like to dress up together and decorate the house, so it's something special for us. It's nice that I have someone who shares this passion with me, as it's been difficult before because I guess the obsession is a little bit odd.
"We were expecting people to say we couldn’t have all these songs and decorations at a wedding, but I think they realised this theme was us. They know us and our obsession with Halloween. My mum, a fellow goth, was jumping for joy."
Kirsty’s interest in all things Halloween started when she was a child and her mum decorated the house in Halloween-like decorations all year round.
"She used to help me get dressed up for trick or treating and, as she's always been into witchcraft, this became a very big thing in our house. We also shared a lot of clothes and many of the items were decorated with skulls on them, so I quickly become her mini double."
And it was Kirsty and Chris' was their love of all things ghoulish brought them together, meeting via a dating site, and Chris proposed to his ‘Halloween bride’ on October 31 2020.
The wedding ceremony is a testament to their love for each other and their love for the unusual.
"I thought our families might not be happy with the theme as it isn’t traditional, but it was our day, so we did things how we wanted," said Kirsty.
For the couple, future Halloweens will have a special resonance and poignancy.
"It’s a day we’ll always remember and Chris really is my ‘ghoul’ mate."
