As the Golden State Warriors retool their roster ahead of another push for an NBA championship, a lot of expectations will fall onto the shoulders of Steph Curry. When you’re the best player on a team that has become a dynasty, pressure, and expectations are part and parcel of the game.
However, Hall of Fame point guard Isaiah Thomas believes that Curry doesn’t receive the respect he deserves, despite widely being recognized as the greatest shooter in the history of the NBA and one of the best players in league history.
“For whatever reason in sport people wanna hate on the small guy,” Thomas said on a July 1 episode of Sway’s Universe. “In sport…the bigger player dominate…But you kind of look at Steph and you go, I can do what he does…Steph doesn’t get enough credit…by the people outside the sport. But the people inside of the sport, Steph Curry walk in the room, we all bow.”
Curry has helped lead the Warriors to four NBA championships while also being named the league MVP on two occasions. Curry’s ability to pull up from anywhere on the court has affected how kids play the game of basketball worldwide and helped usher in a new era of the NBA.
Thomas may be right about Curry receiving more respect within NBA circles than outside of it, but you will be hard-pressed to find anyone disrespecting the legacy that Curry has built with the Warriors, regardless of where their allegiances lie around the league.
