Haley blasts DeSantis, proposes state control of road spending

Governor Haley challenges Governor DeSantis on taxes and economic issues.

In a heated exchange between Governor Haley and Governor DeSantis during a recent debate, the topic of the federal gas tax took center stage. Governor DeSantis accused Governor Haley of trying to eliminate the tax, which generates billions of dollars annually for road construction and repair. In response, Governor Haley vehemently denied ever raising taxes and criticized Governor DeSantis' management of Florida's economy.

Governor Haley dismissed Governor DeSantis' claims, stating, 'We have never raised a tax... I can tell you that we killed the gas tax multiple times.' She argued that if the gas tax were to be raised, income tax should be reduced by five times the amount. Governor DeSantis interjected, accusing Governor Haley of previously attempting to raise taxes. However, there was no definitive proof provided to support his claim.

The discussion then veered towards the state of Florida's economy, with Governor Haley questioning the soaring insurance rates, inflation rates, and cost of living increases in Florida. She also highlighted concerns that senior citizens were facing difficulties affording to live in the state. These statements aimed to challenge Governor DeSantis' claim of a flourishing economy in Florida.

Returning to the gas tax issue, Governor Haley argued for its elimination, claiming that the federal government attached strings to the collected money when it was sent back to the states. These strings, she said, dictated funding for various projects, such as green spaces and sidewalks, without giving states autonomy in decision-making. Governor Haley expressed her desire for states to have control over their road spending, asserting that the money should remain within the states.

Governor DeSantis countered by accusing Governor Haley of previously attempting to raise the gas tax, citing video evidence that was not shown during the debate. He also criticized Governor Haley's record in South Carolina, claiming she had raised taxes during her tenure. However, no specific instances were provided to support this accusation.

In an attempt to shift the narrative, Governor DeSantis highlighted his efforts to alleviate financial burdens on families in Florida. He mentioned the elimination of sales tax on baby items, such as diapers and cribs, aiming to support families and strengthen the American family structure.

The debate between the two governors shed light on their differing viewpoints regarding the federal gas tax and its impact on road infrastructure funding. It also became a platform for Governor Haley to question Governor DeSantis' economic policies in Florida. As the discussion unfolded, it became evident that both governors were intent on defending their records and asserting their vision for the future of their respective states.
