A Sri Lankan restaurant in Hale has been named ‘best fine dining restaurant’ at the annual Asian Restaurant Awards. Sigiriya, in Hale Village, scooped the gong at the ceremony at the Hilton in Manchester this week.
The awards show is held by the Asian Catering Federation, which represents 30,000 Asian and Oriental restaurants around the UK. The restaurant’s owner Don Buddhika said in a post to Instagram: “Thank you so much to the awards. And to each and every one of you that dines with us. We couldn’t be Sigiriya without you!”
The restaurant serves a range of Sri Lankan dishes and curries, as well as street foods and salads. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the Colombo-born restaurant owner said: “I was excited not only for me, but for my team. They did all the hard work to win this trophy.
“I never thought we would win. I always just go to the awards for fun, and if you get something great, if not, you try again next year.
“We are the only Sri Lankan restaurant in Manchester, and when we opened five years ago, we were one of the only Sri Lankan restaurants in the UK. We have a unique atmosphere and a different menu. Sri Lankan food is not like Indian food, we use less oil, more salads, fresh fish and king prawns, coconut milk.”
The restaurant was opened five years ago, celebrating its fifth birthday in February. Mr Buddhika previously worked in Dubai, at the world famous Jumeirah Beach Hotel, where he was food and beverage manager.
