Recent data released by U.N. officials reveals a concerning increase in violence in Haiti, with more than 1,740 individuals killed or injured from July to September. This marks a nearly 30% rise compared to the previous trimester. The capital city of Port-au-Prince has been significantly impacted, as gangs now control 85% of the area, up from 80% previously.

The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) has raised alarms about the situation, highlighting that gangs are assuming roles typically held by law enforcement and the judiciary due to the absence of state representatives. The report indicates that the majority of the 1,223 killings in the third trimester were attributed to gang violence, while at least 106 extrajudicial killings were carried out, including the deaths of six children as young as 10 years old.

Of the 106 extrajudicial killings, 96 were reportedly conducted by police officers, with an additional 10 attributed to a public prosecutor. The report also mentions instances of disproportionate use of lethal force during police operations, resulting in the deaths of civilians alongside suspected gang members.

The La Saline slum in Port-au-Prince witnessed the highest number of killings and injuries, with 234 incidents reported. Gangs have expanded their control to other areas like Carrefour and Gressier, employing extreme brutality to assert dominance. The report details horrific acts of violence, including mutilation, burning alive, and forced cannibalism.

While the number of kidnappings decreased in the third trimester, sexual violence remains a pervasive issue, with 55 cases of gang rape reported. Women and girls, ranging from ages 10 to 70, are targeted both in their homes and in public spaces, enduring prolonged exploitation by gang members.

The surge in violence has left over 700,000 people homeless in recent years, with ongoing attempts by gunmen to seize control of remaining communities. The situation in Haiti remains critical, necessitating urgent intervention to address the escalating violence and protect vulnerable populations.
