Haiti is once again grappling with a surge of chaos as gang wars intensify following the assassination of the country's president in 2021. Gang leaders have become increasingly brutal and emboldened, exploiting power vacuums to bolster their influence in the Caribbean nation.

The situation has escalated to the point where the country's Prime Minister remains stranded outside Haiti due to the closure of the airport, leaving the nation in a state of uncertainty and vulnerability.

Key Events Leading to the Current Crisis:
  • January 2010: A devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes Haiti, claiming the lives of approximately 220,000 people and plunging the country into a severe humanitarian crisis.
  • July 2021: President Jovenel Moïse is assassinated in his residence by a group of foreign mercenaries, triggering a chain of events that has fueled the ongoing wave of gang violence in Haiti.
  • January 2023: Haiti's government fails to conduct elections due to unprecedented levels of gang violence, resulting in the removal of the country's last democratically elected officials and accusations of democratic erosion.
  • February 29, 2024: Gangs launch coordinated attacks in Port-au-Prince, killing several police officers. Gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, also known as Barbecue, claims responsibility for the assaults, aiming to disrupt the return of Prime Minister Ariel Henry from Kenya.

The situation further deteriorates as gangs storm prisons, freeing thousands of inmates, prompting a state of emergency and a nighttime curfew in Haiti. The government's efforts to contain the violence are met with challenges as armed gangs attempt to seize control of the main international airport, disrupting air travel and exacerbating the chaos.

Despite signing agreements for international police deployment to combat gang violence, Prime Minister Henry remains locked out of the country, facing mounting pressure to resign as political alliances shift and power struggles intensify within Haiti.

As Haiti grapples with escalating violence and political turmoil, the future remains uncertain, with citizens anxiously awaiting a resolution to the crisis that has left the nation paralyzed and in a state of emergency.
