Haiti's transitional council has finalized the appointment of a new Cabinet to address the ongoing crisis of gang violence in the country. The new Cabinet, confirmed by government spokeswoman Kettia Marcellus, includes key positions such as Minister of Justice and Public Security, Minister of Interior, and Defense Minister.

The country has been grappling with a surge in gang activity, with gangs controlling a significant portion of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The recent attacks by gangs led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the dissolution of his Cabinet. The violence resulted in numerous casualties and displacements, prompting the government to seek international assistance.

Prime Minister Garry Conille, who also serves as the Interior Minister, has vowed to crack down on the violence. The new Cabinet comprises four women, a notable improvement in gender representation in Haitian politics. However, critics argue that more female participation is essential for the success of the transition.

One of the key challenges facing the new Cabinet is the deepening economic crisis in Haiti, with rising inflation and job losses due to ongoing violence. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Ketleen Florestal, brings experience from the World Bank to address these pressing issues.

Education Minister Antoine Augustin will focus on reopening schools in Port-au-Prince, which have remained closed due to security concerns. The Cabinet includes individuals with international experience, although some observers note the lack of prominent names from Haitian politics.

The transitional council's mandate includes appointing a provisional electoral commission to pave the way for general elections. The council's term is set to expire in 2026, coinciding with the inauguration of a new president.
