Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers says he's back at work and is feeling much healthier after his cancer battle thanks to a particular kind of food.
The TV chef was diagnosed with cancer last year and underwent chemotherapy to treat it, losing his hair in the process as well as his appetite and a lot of weight.
But now he's bounced back and is feeling "fabulous" as he's been eating a diet rich in foods which boost the immune system - including plenty of fermented cabbage.
The chef, 65, told the Mirror: “It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really what food I’ve been having.
“At some stage I need to put weight on but I need things to boost my immune system. So I’ve been eating a lot of sauerkraut.
"It really works for me – sauerkraut, kimchi and meatballs. I live by it. It’s a probiotic and good for the immune system and keeps you regular. I love it. It’s the healthy eating that does it.”
Dave and Si King, other half of the Hairy Bikers, were named Personalities of the Year at the annual Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards earlier this week.
The chef is now recovering after months of chemotherapy during which he was barely able to eat. He also lost his hair and iconic beard, but it has since grown back as he returns to our screens.
Dave has previously told how the gruelling treatment made him lose weight and put him off his food, despite describing himself as a “glutton”. Now he says: “We got back filming this week, a new TV series, and it is a huge step back to normality and winning an award. I got diagnosed last March so it’s been over a year.
“It’s a work in progress and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike.”
The night out with Si at the awards came just weeks after Dave returned to ITV’s This Morning for the first time since revealing his cancer diagnosis in May last year. They prepared some delicious lamb koftas with wholemeal couscous salad paired with a lemon and tahini dressing.
The pair are now also preparing to hit the road to promote their new cook book, The Hairy Dieters’ Eat Well Every Day. Unveiling it online last month, Dave said: “I’m so proud of it’.
Simon added: “This is a special book this, hope you enjoy it!”
